When he kisses me it feels a bit like fear and tastes a bit like tears, but it’s as bright and sweet as sherbet, and I decide to call it joy.

Publisher’s Synopsis:
Ash Winters is barely holding on, near drowning in his own darkness and fear. He lives a gray shadow of a life, sullen and cynical, unable to remember hope or happiness – much less the distant, fading glitterball of love. It has to be a sick joke of the universe that he finds himself hooked up with good-humored Essex boy Darian Taylor, a wannabe model in a sparkly jacket and a fake tan. Darian may not be an intellectual giant, but he’s hysterically funny, and he’s got the courage to challenge Ash to live again.
Just being able to laugh is extraordinary enough to Ash. Loving may be a gift he can’t bear to accept, even if his denial breaks the biggest heart he’s ever known.
Point of view:
1st person. Entirely from Ash’s POV.
Rellim’s Thoughts:
I read this for the first time a few years ago but have been working on buying audios of books I love – so the Spires series is one I recently grabbed.
In some respects this is a difficult romance to get through because it’s not a lot of fun, happy feelings in comparison to Ash’s constant talk of Bipolar/depression/suicide. But that’s what makes it so heartbreakingly authentic. Folks who are really living this are living it daily, often minute by minute. Those who love them are left feeling the brunt, even if it’s not intentional/in their control.
There’s an HEA… but it will take a box of tissues to get there.
Narration:
Nicholas Bolton’s narration is so fantastic that it’s like listening to a cast production. (makes note to hunt down everything Bolton has ever narrated). Darian is beyond fabulous as Ash’s glitter pirate that I was in love with him before Ash was.
