The best lie is one so exquisite and so tempting that both the deceiver and the listener yearn for it to be true.

Format:
Audible. Available to borrow via Kindle Unlimited with audio included. If you don’t have KU, this is one of those audios that’s less expensive to buy the ebook & add audio. Less than $3 for both at the time of this review.

Publisher’s Synopsis:
In a world violated by terror, the old lines have blurred. Meet the next generation of covert ops.

John Dempsey’s life—as an elite Tier One Navy SEAL named Jack Kemper—is over. A devastating terrorist action catapults him from a world of moral certainty and decisive orders into the shadowy realm of espionage, where ambiguity is the only rule. His new mission: hunt down those responsible for the greatest tragedy in the history of the US Special Ops and bring them to justice.

But how does a man torn between duty and revenge walk the line and preserve his soul?

As Dempsey struggles with the games of spies, the case propels him across the globe in a desperate effort to prevent a new, horrifying attack on American soil.

Once, John Dempsey followed orders blindly. Now he sees behind the curtain, and the security of the civilized world rests on one question: Can a Tier One Navy SEAL adapt and become the world’s most lethal spy?

Rellim’s Thoughts:
I’m a big fan of military/spec ops books and this didn’t disappoint. This first book in the Tier One trilogy is reminiscent of the complexities in The Bourne Identity ~ the world-building was thorough without being tedious, the characters were relatable (even if hated), and the plot-twists create the perfect suspense while still believable. I will say that this novel doesn’t belabor long explanations (sometimes no definitions are provided) for military acronyms, ranks, spec ops directives, etc. I’ve read a considerable amount of military books, both fiction & non, so this wasn’t an issue for me. I don’t think it would detract ~ but a newbie to this genre might be overwhelmed, or at least need Google nearby to help translate.

Narration:
Ray Porter’s narration was impeccable. Each character had a clearly defined “voice” and was expertly portrayed even with numerous accents, genders, & personalities. I’ve listened to all 5 books (as of this review) in the series and Porter’s continuity is spectacular.
