The strong emotions she’d tamped down for twelve long years surged up her throat and threatened to bring her to tears.

Publisher’s Synopsis:
When Ben Sheridan is released from prison in 1936, he returns to his hometown to lead a simple life. Although he’s paid his debt to society, he’s never forgiven himself for the unthinkable act that forced him to take the life of his step-brother over a decade before.

Storekeeper Heather O’Malley has never played the victim, but she’s still a “scarred” young woman. She seizes the opportunity to help Ben restart his life, in part to atone for her silence about the events that sent her rescuer to prison.

Ben can’t resist Heather’s free-spirited approach to life, and she can’t resist his reluctant charm. Neither intends to fall in love, but when dangers from their past threaten their connection they discover just how fiercely they’re willing to fight for each other and their future.

Rellim’s Thoughts:
This was my Thanksgiving travel listen. Quite the treat.

I’m not one to throw out 5 stars often, but this was an incredibly wonderful story. M. K. Chester again weaves the perfect mix of romance, suspense, and even a little action. Set in the 1930’s, Ben is returning home after 12 years in prison. Heather is tied up in his past but also seems to be the key to his future. Both in correcting misperceptions about him and his happiness. I’m struggling here because I don’t want to leave a short & vague review – but I also don’t want to spoil any of the revelations that are such a treat to discover.

The complete immersion in the town, it’s people, and the burgeoning relationship is amazing. I feel like I could simultaneously describe homes and stores, yet wasn’t bored or overwhelmed with details. It’s a balance for sure and Chester executes it flawlessly. This is the type of book I will definitely listen to over and over again.

Note: While part of a series, all the Bryeton Books are set in different eras with no overlapping characters or events. These truly stand alone and can be listened to in any order.

Narration:
This was my first experience with narrator Jennifer Groberg. She has the perfect voice for this genre and her accents were lovely. I did feel like her speech became slightly stilted with the male characters – lacking the fluidity she expressed in all other parts. None of this would keep me from listening to her in the future.

While I received a free copy of this audiobook from Story Origin, I purchased Bryeton Books: A Vintage Romance Box Set.
