Publisher’s Synopsis:
A stolen nuclear bomb. Sworn enemies forced together. A race to save the world.

The last person emergency room doctor Lillian Whyte expects to collide with while on her vacation is the ruthless mercenary from her past. When she learns a stolen nuclear weapon is loose in Europe, she’s launched into a dangerous race to track and secure the weapon.

Isolated from her CIA operative husband, she must undertake the life-threatening mission with a man she doesn’t trust at her side. Despite her best efforts, those intent on global catastrophe remain one step ahead.

As Lillian faces the fears of her past and threats of the present, can she secure the future of the world before the clock runs out, or will the dark forces acting against her succeed in their deadly plot?

Point of view:
3rd Person. Alternating perspectives. Mostly from Sean & Lillian’s POV, but there are some scenes from various secondary characters.

Rellim’s Thoughts:
Gray Horizon is closed door romantic suspense that is best enjoyed by those who appreciate more action/suspense than romance. Approximately two years after the second book in the series, Whyte Knight, we’re reunited with Dr. Lillian Whyte and her CIA operative husband Sean Jennings. This time Lily & Sean are separated and working parallel angles to hunt down and dismantle a nuclear bomb.

There were small blurbs/paragraphs in each chapter that were snippets of DOD reports from after the main action was occurring. To me, they felt disruptive of the flow and pacing of the story without adding anything useful. I also initially struggled with Lillian’s place in hunting for the nuke.

Setting those two points aside, I still really enjoyed this book. Because Lily and Sean are in different countries working their own angles, this feels like multiple stories cohesively coming together for one suspense filled book. There are a lot of action sequences in this one which made it difficult when I had to pause (who needs dinner?).

I loved the epilogue giving us the perfect closing to the series. Though, I wonder whether she’s opened the door to a new series featuring Lillian’s brother, Jonathan and his operative girlfriend. Because I would be absolutely thrilled to be transported to that world with Samet at the helm.

Narration:
Leslie Howard repeats her fantastic performance from the first two books. She gives each character, even from other countries, consistent and distinguishable accents. Specifically, Howard’s voice is often a “competent calm” that compliments Lillian’s character perfectly. She evokes emotion and tension in a way that heightens the action.

Trigger Warnings (possible spoilers):
Deaths of secondary characters. Peril for a small child.
