Can Michael discover more about his past and find love with Alex?
Michael comes home to Ellery to face his past, only his present keeps intruding in the form of his agent Alex Casey, who won’t take no for an answer.
Michael Hardin is back in Ellery to face his past. The victim of a hate crime, he has memories that lie just out of his reach and nightmares that won’t leave him alone.
Alex Casey loves Michael but he completely ruined everything by treating Michael like someone who needed to be wrapped in cotton wool.
Point of view:
3rd person. Alternating by chapter between Michael & Alex’s perspectives.
Rellim’s Thoughts:
Note: I read through this series during a time I was incredibly ill. Unfortunately my reviews are quite lacking. Please do not view this as an indicator that I didn’t enjoy the books or would hesitate to recommend them. I truly enjoyed the entire series and consistently appreciate Scott’s writing.
This is set about 6 years after the last book – The Barman and the SEAL. While Mikey-now-Michael was featured as a townie briefly mentioned in previous books, I’d definitely recommend reading book 5, The Paramedic & the Writer as events in that book heavily featured Mikey and set a foundation for this one.
The beginning was clunky to me and despite being excited for Michael finding love and success after all his trauma – It took me a while to get into this one. Alex is weirdly stalkerish, and while the reasoning behind his behavior is kind of explained, it made him pretty unlikeable as a character. They did finally smooth out their issues, but it felt like very little & an overly quick resolution. More of an HFN than feeling like these two were solid.
I did like the slight glimpse into the lives of the guys from previous books and how they’re doing. Scott launches two new characters in the next book, The Sinner and the Saint.
Side note: I don’t know why but Scott has used the name Zach for a secondary character in four of these books now. It gets confusing because none of them are the same person.
About the author:
RJ is the author of the over one hundred novels and discovered romance in books at a very young age. She realized that if there wasn’t romance on the page, she could create it in her head, and is a lifelong writer.
She lives and works out of her home in the beautiful English countryside, spends her spare time reading, watching films, and enjoying time with her family.
The last time she had a week’s break from writing she didn’t like it one little bit and has yet to meet a bottle of wine she couldn’t defeat.
