Love is the deadliest lie.
I never meant to start a war.
I ran away, and now they want my life. All because my first taste of love was my first betrayal.
But the rules have changed, and I’m done playing fair.
I refuse to turn my back on Mateo’s darkness when it’s always the light that burns me.
I’ve danced with the devil.
Now it’s time to become one.
I never meant to abandon her.
They took my life when I tried to walk away. Leighton’s morals never had a chance in my corrupt world.
Now, all I want is to forget her, but they want her soul.
I’ve only had one weakness, one reason for turning my back on everything I’ve ever known.
I’m coming for what’s mine.
And God help anyone who gets in my way.
Point of view:
1st person. Alternating between Mateo & Leighton’s perspectives.
This story is book 2 in Cora Kenborn’s Carrera Cartel trilogy. While Mateo & Leighton’s story stands on its own, best enjoyed after listening to book 1.
Going to admit I was already half way in love with Mateo at the end of Blurred Red Lines. I was so excited for him to get his own HEA. Learning he was paired with Brody’s sister, Leighton was a bonus.
I really enjoyed this second chance, star crossed lovers story. It’s Cartel so this one starts off with a murder and keeps going with even more suspense and action. Mateo Cortes is sent to protect Leighton Harcourt without realizing that he already knows her. While I don’t usually enjoy flashbacks, Kenborn used them sparingly and it didn’t slow or disrupt the current storyline. There’s several misunderstandings, big secrets, and constant treachery. So good.
I enjoyed Mateo & Leighton coming back together, fighting enemies from all angles, and getting their forever in a way neither thought possible. I feel vague in my review but I don’t want to spoil any of the many surprises.
I’m ready for Brody’s book (and conclusion to the trilogy), Drawn Blue Lines.
Sarah Puckett & Aaron Shedlock were amazing. Terrific accents especially – the entire performance was wonderful. The kind of audio you get truly lost in.
About the author:
Cora Kenborn is a USA Today Bestselling author who writes in multiple genres from dark and gritty romantic suspense to laugh-out-loud romantic comedy. Known for her sharp banter and shocking blindsides, Cora pushes her characters and readers out of their comfort zones and onto an emotional roller coaster before delivering a twisted happily ever after.
Cora believes there’s nothing better than a feisty heroine who keeps her alpha on his toes, and she draws inspiration from the sassy country women who raised her. However, since the domestic Southern Belle gene seems to have skipped a generation, she spends any free time convincing her family that microwaving Hot Pockets counts as cooking dinner.
Oh, and autocorrect thinks she’s obsessed with ducks.
