His eyes were dancing. He was so close she could feel the warmth radiating off him.

Publisher’s Synopsis:
Actor Ryan Kwok is back in Toronto after the promotional tour for his latest film, a rom-com that is getting less-than-stellar reviews. After the sudden death of his mother and years of constant work, Ryan is taking some much-needed time off. But as he tries to be supportive to his family, he struggles with his loss and doesn’t know how to talk to his dad—who now trolls him on Twitter instead of meeting him for dim sum.

Innovative baker Lindsay McLeod meets Ryan when he knocks over two dozen specialty donuts at her bakery. Their relationship is off to a messy start, but there’s no denying their immediate attraction. When Ryan signs up for a celebrity episode of Baking Fail, he asks Lindsay to teach him how to bake and she agrees.

As Lindsay and Ryan spend time together, bonding over grief and bubble tea, it starts to feel like they’re cooking up something sweeter than cupcakes in the kitchen.

Point of view:
1st person. Alternating between Ryan & Lindsay’s perspectives.

Rellim’s Thoughts:
Awe! This was a super sweet, low angst, hunger inducing, giggle generating, and adorable listen.

If you’re like me and sometimes lament how unbelievable a couple is because they’ve spent four days together and are now madly in love – this book is for you. I adored all the time Ryan and Lindsay spent getting to know one another, becoming friends, then more. How Ryan is learning to open up about his feelings and Lindsay dealing with the public side of dating a movie star.

Seriously – have snacks nearby because Lindsay spends a good chunk of the book teaching Ryan how to bake. All those descriptions of donuts, cakes, frostings… all the flavors. (BRB, I need another donut!)

This was so much more than a romance. The family and friends aspect was wonderful as well. Lau balanced the good and the bad of interpersonal relationships without creating a villain. A lot of it was just learning how to communicate, live with grief, and other major life events.

I loved that the only blip in their relationship was resolved quickly and Ryan & Lindsay’s HEA. A sweet little epilogue was the sprinkles on top.

Narration:
Carolyn Kang and Kenzo Lee’s narration was absolutely delightful. They both have the perfect voice for 20-somethings and the personalities Lau wrote. It was so easy to just put in my earbuds and get completely lost in the story. 🥰

About the author:
Jackie Lau decided she wanted to be a writer when she was in grade two, sometime between writing “The Heart That Got Lost” and “The Land of Shapes.” She later studied engineering and worked as a geophysicist before turning to writing romance novels.

Jackie lives in Toronto with her husband, and despite living in Canada her whole life, she hates winter. When she’s not writing, she enjoys gelato, gourmet donuts, cooking, hiking, and reading on the balcony when it’s raining.

About the narrators:
Carolyn Kang is a native New Yorker who caught the performing bug at age 4, when she begged her mom for piano and singing lessons (thanks mom!) She has a B.A. in Psychology from Columbia University, where she discovered Psychology’s surprising connection with acting—they are both the study of human behavior, after all. She continues her acting studies at MN Acting Studio and Terry Knickerbocker Studio. Her recent work includes playing a teen bully on the latest season of “Awkwafina is Nora From Queens” on HBO Max and an enthusiastic employee opposite Annabella Sciorra in the Amazon Prime movie “Before I Go”.
