Publisher’s Synopsis:
Even at thirty seven, with a challenging but rewarding career as a paramedic,

Bella Gomez is treated as the baby of the family. It’s made her allergic to anyone meddling, so she chooses to keep mostly to herself. Unfortunately that doesn’t stop her family from inserting themselves in her life. Nor does it deter the one man she knows she shouldn’t get close to from showing up on her doorstep.

Jasper Greene, an FBI agent with the La Plata County field office, doesn’t even know the meaning of family. His team is his family, which is why—when his boss asks him to keep an eye on his baby sister—Jasper readily complies. Even when the sister in question is a spectacularly developed princess with plenty of attitude.

With a shooter on the loose and corruption running rampant, Bella is a magnet for trouble, and Jasper finds himself with his hands full—in more ways than one.

Point of view:
1st person. Alternating between Jasper & Bella’s perspectives.

Rellim’s Thoughts:
This is book 2 in the Rock Point series. While you don’t have to listen to book Keeping 6 to enjoy this, I’d recommend it. Series is definitely best enjoyed in order.

I really enjoyed Jasper & Bella’s story. Barker’s characters are older – Jasper is 41 and Bella is 37- which I loved. While things are going great with her career Bella is secretly struggling with depression. I really like the way Barker handled such a complicated topic, especially Jasper’s willingness to support Bella without micromanaging her. Which means a lot because the majority of her family still sees and treats her as “the baby” of the family. My only complaint would be Jasper using the word “Squirt” as a pet name for Bella. It doesn’t feel like a romantic endearment. (Note: this actually didn’t bother me the second time through, must have just hit me wrong the first time around.)

Like book 1, this has a fantastic mix of fairly low angst romance, mystery, and suspense. Cops in town are being murdered and as the complicated investigation unravels it’s apparent many people in town are connected. There’s a kidnapping, survival of the victim, and rescue that adds to the story. I enjoyed the pacing.

I was delighted by the updates on Damian and Kerry as well as the subtle foundations for book 3, HWY 550. This was an enjoyable listen.

Narration:
I loved Teddy Hamilton & Cynthia Farrell’s performances. They were the perfect match for their individual characters. Especially Farrell’s accents and Spanish.

About the narrators:
Cynthia Farrell has been a musical theater singer and recording artist all of her life.   She has been performing off-Broadway since coming to New York to receive her BFA from NYU’s musical theater department.  She has also created an award-winning career in audiobook narration, commercial voiceover and video game voiceover- she has developed a fan base for playing “Catalina” in the Grand Theft Auto game series.  In her audiobook narration, she is known for her portrayal of strong female characters, and uses an always engaged, uniquely human delivery of language that is enhanced by her clear, strong, mellifluous singer’s tone and diction. Her voice work is in both English and Spanish, as she grew up speaking both languages- it has given her a unique niche as she doesn’t have an accent in either language. Cynthia has a large body of audiobook work ranging: Romance, Fantasy, Science-Fiction, Young Adult, Motivational & general non-fiction, and Crime drama.  In addition to narrating over 150 for retail publishers and producers, she has recorded over 100 books for The Library of Congress, not listed here.
